Repairing Rotted Wood

Wood rot is a more common threat in the Washington, D.C., area than many homeowners may realize, earning it the nickname the “silent destroyer.”  Our humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and cold, wet winters, provides ideal conditions for the growth of fungi, which include rotted wood, mold, and mildew. If you notice areas around the house with mold or mildew, you likely have some wood rot as well.

Wood rot is a form of decay caused by specific types of fungi that thrive in moist conditions. These fungi feed on the cellulose fibers in the wood, destroying its composition. There are three primary types of wood rot:

Brown Rot

Also known as dry rot, brown rot is one of the most aggressive types. It attacks the wood’s cellulose, causing it to shrink, turn a deep brown color, and break into small, cube-shaped pieces. Despite its name, the fungi that cause brown rot require moisture to grow, typically preferring temperatures between 65°F and 90°F.

White Rot

This type of fungus breaks down lignin, the polymer or “glue” that gives wood its rigidity. The infected wood may have a white or light-yellow appearance and feel spongy to the touch. It also thrives in similar temperature ranges to brown rot.

Soft Rot

Soft rot takes its time to “eat” through the wood fibers. It is commonly found in dead logs, but soft rot can also invade wood in homes under certain conditions. This fungus is often identified by its honeycomb-like appearance. It can also withstand extreme temperature variations, thriving in temperatures ranging from 0°F to 110°F.

Can Wood Rot Make You Sick?

While wood rot itself isn’t directly toxic, the fungi that cause it can release spores into the air, which can travel throughout your home’s ductwork and ventilation system. Inhaling these spores can trigger allergic reactions, asthma attacks, and other respiratory issues in sensitive individuals. Additionally, prolonged exposure to damp, moldy environments can lead to more severe health problems. Therefore, addressing wood rot promptly is vital to protect your home and family.

Common Areas for Wood Rot

You are likely to find wood rot in areas around structures that remain damp for extended periods, such as:

Attic

Leaks in the roof or poor ventilation can create conditions that promote wood rot in the rafters, joists, and trusses.

Exterior Door & Window Moulding

These areas are constantly exposed to rain and humidity, making them highly susceptible to rotting.

Door & Window Frames

Small gaps can allow water to seep in, leading to rot, particularly in older wooden frames where water can accumulate on sills.

Roof Decking

Any compromised roofing can allow moisture to reach the decking, leading to rot that can require the premature replacement of the entire roof.

Decks

Continuously exposed to the elements, outdoor decks are prime targets for wood rot, especially in areas with pooling water or damp wood surfaces.

Fascia

The fascia board, which protects the edge of your roof, is often exposed to precipitation and humid conditions, causing it to rot if not properly maintained or if you have clogged gutters.

JW Home Improvement can complete most wood rot repairs within a day, though more severe or widespread damage may require additional time. Wood rot should be repaired promptly, as it can spread, compromising your home’s structural integrity and potentially leading to costly structural failures.
